Disney Favourites: Animation

This post was inspired by Danielle of Underland To Wonderland. She writes awesome Disney related posts, amongst other things, so if Disney is your thing you should definitely check out her blog! So my actual list of all time favourites is closer to ten movies but I thought that was a little much, so here's a list of five of my favourite animated Disney movies and why I love them. Perhaps I'll make a list of my other favourites in the future.

Lion King II:
Simba's Pride

"If there's so much I must be can I still just be me, the way I am?"

This may sound like blasphemy or sacrilege to some people, but the sequel to Lion King is one of my all time favourite Disney movies. I love it even more than the original. Don't get me wrong Lion King is a beautifully animated movie and technically superior in many ways, but personally I preferred Kiara to Nala, Kovu to Simba and as much as it pains me to say it Zira to Scar. With the addition of Nuka (RIP) and Vitani I was completely sold. Most of the original cast returned to their roles and there were some great additions such as Suzanne Pleshette. I find myself singing songs from it much more than the original too. Particular favourites being My Lullaby, We Are One and Not One Of Us, but I pretty much love them all! I know a lot of people aren't fond of straight to tape sequels and don't give them a chance, but I'd really recommend giving Lion King II: Simba's Pride a watch!

The Emperor's New Groove

"Don't listen to that guy. He's trying to lead you down the path of righteousness. I'm gonna lead you down the path that ROCKS! "

Need I say more? It's an immense film. Beautiful animation, great cast and just overall hilarious. Yzma has to be near the top, if not the top, of my favourite Disney villain list! And Kuzco is one of my favourite Disney characters of all time too. Not to mention Kronk! You can't go wrong with a bit of Patrick Warburton. Now for of my favourite scenes!

Pocahontas

"You can own the earth and still, all you'll own is earth until you can paint with all the colours of the wind."

Okay Disney may have butchered history with this one, but I love Pocahontas nonetheless. It ignited my love for and interest in the Native American culture. Out of all the Disney princesses, Pocahontas was the one I wanted to be. I mean she's beautiful, she's got a raccoon and hummingbird as her sidekicks, she talks to a super old tree... What's not to love? My dad also loved the film and because I was a daddy's girl, I loved watching it with him. The soundtrack also holds a lot of nostalgia for me. My sister was a stage school child and that meant she got asked to sing a lot and Colours Of The Wind was one of her go to songs. If I Never Knew You was also performed, but not by her, in one of the Aladdin pantos she was in. It's still one of my favourite songs from a Disney soundtrack, though I think it was a good thing they didn't have the song version in the movie. Mel Gibson must have had the same singing coach as Russell Crowe in Les Mis.

Mulan

"You don't meet a girl like that every dynasty."

As a kid I was always considered a tomboy. One of my favourite games to play was armies and I guess that's why I love Mulan so much. I always kind of wanted to be a boy and I loved the fact that Mulan showed you didn't need to be to kick ass and save China. When most people think of Eddie Murphy as a funny sidekick they think of him as Donkey from Shrek, but my favourite will always be Mushu. I also loved Grandmother Fa, she was hilarious. Not to mention the awesome soundtrack! I'll Make A Man Out Of You is one of my all time favourite Disney songs. I'd be lying if I said I didn't get totally into it every time I sing along to it.

The AristoCats

"Ladies don't start fights, but they can finish them!"

A film full of cute kitties, need I say more? I remember thinking how pretty and classy Duchess was and Thomas O'Malley reminded me of John Wayne. I loved the kittens too, Berlioz was or well is my favourite and I always wanted a kitten just like him to name after him. This movie had a bigger impact on me and inspired me more than I can explain in this post, so that's a story for another post!

So there you have it. Five of my favourite animated Disney films. I'll perhaps do a part two in a few weeks. I always feel really guilty for leaving anything would when I make lists. Anyway!

Tell me some of your favourite animated Disney films!

I adore your picks so much as it's amazing to see some classics on the list :D (no Frozen in sight! Yey! haha)
Pocahontas is the Princess I'd be too and the soundtrack is amazing, so that your sister got to sing colours of the wind is really special.

This post will for sure be featured in my post on Sunday!! <3

    1. Aha, I thought you'd like it! I think I'm the one that should be thanking you for inspiring me! I have to admit, Frozen may feature in my next list but for slightly different reasons than people usually like it, I think. You can be the judge! Aha.
Yeah, it's a beautiful film. Even if it doesn't exactly have a happy ending! The old style of animation will always be my favourite. I wish Disney did it still. It felt a lot more artistic.

Oh, awesome! Thank you. <3 xx

  3. Oh Mulan is one of my favourite all time Disney movies - it always makes me cry! I love this type of post - anything Disney related I love! Emperor's New Groove is one of my favourites too, it always makes me laugh! My favourites are The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules, but I will always have a big soft spot for The Little Mermaid and Aladdin because they were the first two Disney films I saw! Lovely post. - Tasha

    1. Oh really? I don't think I've ever cried at Mulan. However I have cried at The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. To the point I actually can't watch it anymore. Once I hit puberty I could no longer handle the scene where they throw stuff at him etc. Else it may have made this list! Hercules will be on my second list for sure. It's an awesome movie. I loved Ariel as a kid. I had so many dolls of her, but I don't remember ever fully watching the movie. I had a tape with two Little Mermaid cartoon episodes on it. One had a baby orca in it called Spot. It was so cute! It was my favourite Little Mermaid related movie/show. :D Thanks for your comment! xo

  4. Aww I love all of these! The Lion King is probably my favourite, but as a child I loved Pocahontas, because I am olive skinned and felt I could relate to her the most, I also had a huge crush on John Smith, HAHA!

    1. The Lion King is a great one. It was the first movie I ever cried at! Lol. Awh, that's awesome. I wish I had her olive skin and particularly her dark eyes! Bah, who didn't love John Smith? I was always bummed out they didn't end up together. LOL. xo

  5. This is such a fun post! I hope you do a part two - I love reading about other people's favourite Disney films!

Pocahontas, Mulan and Esmeralda were my favourite Disney films when I was growing up - they're all so independent, strong and fearless. I definitely thought they were a lot more fun to watch then the traditional princesses.

Simba's Pride is such a great film - I'm so glad you mentioned it. I think it's has great animation and a wonderful storyline for "just" being a sequel. Upendi and Not One Of Us are my favourite songs from it - I can't help but sing along when I watch it (or look the songs up on Youtube, not going to lie...).

p.s. speaking of songs, I'll Make A Man Out Of You is genuinely one of my favourite Disney songs - if I'm having a bad morning, blasting this while I get ready is guaranteed to make me feel so much more ready to seize the day, haha!

    1. Thank you! It's definitely on the cards. I had a lot of fun with this one. :)

Exactly! My only issue with Esmeralda was she didn't end up with Quasimodo. As a disabled person that never sat right with me. Lol.

I know. I feel like more people should know about it and it's a shame it just went straight to tape. The songs are highly addictive! I can listen to the album right through on Spotify. :D

I'll Make A Man Out Of You is the perfect getting ready to kick the day's ass song! It always makes me feel better too.

  6. Disney movies often show children the importance of being safe and listening to your guardians. Ariel from the Little Mermaid leaves the advice of her father and makes a deal with a dangerous witch, risking her life. I had frozen dvd and messages like this inform children to listen to advice given by their parents and to stay safe.

  7. Its so hard having to choose. I love Lion King and the second one is really good as well. Pocahontas and Mulan are also amazing. Can't really beat Emperors new groove but I also adore Lilo & Stitch. Stitch is just so adorable. He is my favourite. Oooh and Princess & the frog. Love that film
