#1 My Mood Music

"One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain."
Bob Marley

I'm a firm believer in the power of music and it's ability to influence our mood. Well I know it has an impact on mine for sure. When I'm at my lowest I know I can put on certain songs and they will help set me on the path to feeling better, whether that's by cheering me up with their encouraging lyrics, their fun beat or by helping me get the boohoos out. Often when we don't know what to say or do to vent how we feel the lyrics put into words what we cannot. While I know we all have our own go to songs for this I thought I would share some of my own favourites in today's post. I decided to list five I listen to to cheer me up and five I listen to to help me wallow and get the boohoo's out of my system. I also included some of the lyrics I connect with most from each song.

Cheer Up Songs

"Smile, the worst is yet to come
We'll be lucky if we ever see the sun
Got nowhere to go, we could be here for a while
But the future is forgiven, so smile."

Okay, this song could very easily go on the wallowing list but for some reason it's just really uplifting. It really does just make me smile. It's one of the newer songs on this and probably the one I go to most right now. I definitely recommend checking it out.

"I would like to hold my little hand
And we will run, we will, we will crawl
Send me on my way."

The first time I heard this was in Matilda but I really fell in love with it when they used it in Ice Age as it's one of my favourite movies. EVER. I think my favourite part is the music in the intro but the whole song is just really uplifting. You can't help but want to skip and dance along to it. Maybe part of the appeal is that it reminds me of being young and carefree. Gosh.. I cannot believe Ice Age came out when I was twelve. I feel old.

"And I cried as cameras caught my eyes,
My tears turned into butterflies,
They fly away as caskets close
A new day comes you'll wake unfold,
Smile when you feel the sunlight."

I've loved this song ever since I was sixteen and came across it by chance. I was joking around with a friend and we decided to type snails into a music search engine to see what random songs came up. I guess you could say I struck gold as I was introduced to one of my favourite bands ever, The Format. Again it's just a really uplifting song about how snails get to see the benefits of life because they take their time. We could all take a leaf out of their book.

"You're over my head, I'm out of my mind
Thinking I was born in the wrong time
It's love on rewind,
Everything is so throwback-ish (I kinda like it, like it)
Out of my league, old school chic
Like a movie star from the silver screen
You're one of a kind living in a world gone plastic
Baby you're so classic."

Okay, this is one of those songs I listen to and pretend it's about me. I'm not even ashamed to admit it. It's just so upbeat and poppy with a little rap thrown in too. I just all round love this song. Definitely worth a listen.

"If I dream everything I wanna be, if I dream all the possibilities
If you just believe in your wildest dreams they will come true, they will come true."

This is another recent addition to this list and another one I go to most right now. If I'm honest right now it's mostly RuPaul songs I go to but I only wanted to pick one for this post, even if it was very difficult! So many of his songs are the kind of songs that just make you feel good and want to dance.

Songs For Wallowing

"We wake up with pounding heads,
Bruised down below.
I should have built better walls,
Or slept in my clothes."

This song just speaks to the part of me that is too afraid to fall in love and let someone in again. It's as simple as that. When someone shows interest in me and I just feel this fight or flight desire and that part of me makes me feel crappy, I listen to this song. It just soothes me.

"You pull away so easily."

This song very much tells a story and that one lyric above is the bit that really gets to me. I think we've all had those exes that we've tried to stay friends with. The person that you'd rather have as a friend than nothing even if it kills you. You have that adjustment period where everything changes. This song captures that pain perfectly.

"Automatic bought the years you'd talk for me
That night you played me 'Lip Parade'
Not the needle, nor the thread, the lost decree
Saying nothing, that's enough for me
...and at once I knew I was not magnificent."

This song is just lyrically beautiful and Bon Iver just has a really moving and beautiful voice. Basically anything he sings could be on this list, but I decided to go with this song.

"And I'm so damn scared
Of dying without you,
But I've come prepared
Resolved for my life to wear a funeral suit."

Keaton Henson is another with a hauntingly beautiful voice that has many songs I could have picked for this list. However this is the first of his songs I started listening to after it played in the final scene of the first series of In The Flesh. I hadn't even watched the whole series and I still found myself crying for a character I barely knew because of this song. It's just beautiful and moving.

"It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds."

Finally we have some Death Cab For Cutie. One of the oldest go to songs on this list, in the sense it's been on this list the longest. I've listened to this song in some of my darkest times. It's always helped me get the boohoos out. It's beautiful and moving lyrically and another song that really tells a story.

And there you have it. Some of my favourite go to songs when I feel like I need help moving in an emotional direction. Obviously this isn't the complete list but just some of ones I find myself going to most. If you like this kind of post please let me know and I'll do more in the future!
