Halloween | Baking Buns

"My idea of baking is buying a ready-make cake mix and throwing in an egg."
Cilla Black

Today's post is yet another poor attempt at baking. I often see other people's creations and think, I'm a mildly artistic person... I can totally pull that off. Well, I'm always wrong. Always. Even cutting baking corners with Betty Crocker's finest, my buns always end up looking like a five year old made them. I mean they taste good and all, hard to go wrong with a pre-made mix, but I won't be entering a prettiest cupcake contest any time soon. Despite this I continue in my efforts and sharing them with you guys. So on with the buns!

My local Tesco had surprisingly little when it came to Halloween themed baking stuff. None of the cute little sprinkles or toppers that I've seen other's use. So I did my best with what I had to work with. I decided to go with the red velvet cake mix because well... it's red. However, it's not really red. It's brown, so that kind of sucked.

It was supposed to be a cake mix but I wanted to make buns. I used the leftover Halloween themed bun cases from Poundland that featured in this post. There was more mix than bun cases so we filled them up as much as we could and still ended up throwing some of the mix out.

I left them to cool for a couple of hours as I have a habit of attempting to decorate too soon and having the icing melt. My game plan for decorating was to cover them in the white frosting then using the black icing to put faces on them. I'd chilled the black icing but it got soft super fast and was harder to work with than I thought it would be. Still, I did my best.

After I did the four above I got bored and the black icing was getting super melty so I ended up sacking off decorating the rest properly and covering them in the Betty Crocker icing and dumping some green sand stuff on top. Totally Halloweeny.

And there you have my latest attempt at festive baking. Okay, I'm a little proud of the faces on the bottom two of the first four. They were the first two I did and I was still sort of into it by then. I also think they all look more Halloween themed in black and white.

Have you done any festive baking?
