Bloo's Reviews | The Circle

"We are not criminals, after all. We are not criminals."

Today I am reviewing a beautiful Swiss docudrama called The Circle (Der Kreis). It was released in 2014, written and directed by Stefan Haupt and stars Matthias Hungerbühler and Sven Schelker. The film follows those involved with a magazine for gay men in Zurich in the 1940s and 1950s, The Circle, which served as a scapegoat for the murders of several gay men in the city. While we get learn about the background to the publication and are introduced to some of the wider social network that revolved around it the docudrama mainly focuses on the relationship between teacher Ernst Ostertag (Hungerbühler) and drag queen Röbi Rapp (Schelker).

This docudrama was just beautifully put together, interesting and poignant. It shows how far we've come and how far we haven't. It also shows how we can think we've come a long way but then be thrown back into an archaic reality. I loved that they didn't simply make a film about this story but we get to hear the it from the real Ernst and Röbi, all these years later.

It's a reminder that these weren't just made up characters acting out a made up story. These were real men and real stories. Real history. And Matthias Hungerbühler and Sven Schelker are a real credit to both Ernst and Röbi and their story. Sven Shelker was my particular favourite.

I really can't recommend this docudrama enough. I struggle to put into words how much it moved me. It's personally something I could watch many times.

  1. This looks really interesting, will definitely have to track it down and watch it. I love it when you get that mix of real life with the drama aspect, like Band of Brothers and The Pacific. - Tasha

    1. I watched it on the UK Netflix, I think. But yeah, me too! Especially when they're done as well as this.
