My Animated Baes

"The mark of a true crush... is that you fall in love first and grope for reasons afterward."
Shana Alexander

I think everyone - whether they are comfortable admitting or or not - have at least one animated character they crushed on when they were younger. That one character that made you go, 'oh wow'. It didn't always make sense. It wasn't always the overtly sexual characters like Jessica Rabbit, sometimes it wasn't even the human characters. What can I say? The heart wants what the heart wants. Now for some these crushes are merely a childhood thing but for others - namely me - they linger and some new ones might surprise you in adulthood.

I used to be embarrassed by my crushes on these characters but I soon learned it wasn't all that uncommon. Whether that makes it any less creepy or weird I don't know. I'll leave that up to you to decide. I thought it would be fun to share my animated crush list and see which, if any, of my readers share my feels. Now on with the list!

Kovu (The Lion King II: Simba's Pride)

Kovu is well known for sparking (probably uncomfortably) many a sexual awakening, so it probably comes to no surprise that he's the first in my list also. He's the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks turned good... in lion form? He's even tall, dark and handsome. In like a feline kind of way? You just know that if Kovu was a person, dude would be hot. Here's another gif since he's the one that inspired this post.

Swoon... am I right?

Hiccup (How To Train Your Dragon 2)

It is imperative to say this crush only pertains to Hiccup in How To Train Your Dragon 2. Animated or not, they still have to be legal. I'm not THAT creepy. I feel like this crush also has a lot to do with the fact Jay Baruchel voices Hiccup. I can't help but imagine him playing the live action counterpart. Regardless, Hiccup in the first film is cute but Hiccup in the second film? He's grown.

Kristoff (Frozen)

Again, I LOVE Jonathan Groff who voices Kristoff. So that gives him big points when it comes to this list. He's another I can see playing the live action counterpart. Plus, he's an animal lover and ain't his eyes just dreamy? I feel like if Kristoff had had a better song I would have had more than a crush, I would have been darn right in love with him. I still think it's a travesty he only got the reindeer song, if that even counts as a song? Still, I love me some Kristoff.

Li Shang (Mulan)

Okay... Li Shang probably wouldn't make this list if it wasn't for the song I'll Make A Man Out Of You. Donny Osmond may have horrible views but dude can sing. Then there's the fact Li Shang has penchant for prancing around without a shirt, showing off his stick handling abilities. And you know he must have been checking out Mulan before the big reveal, but I guess that's beside the point...

Diego (Ice Age)

Well, apparently I have a thing for bad big cats turned good. Though aside from that running theme, I feel like Kovu and Diego couldn't be any more different. I feel like Diego has less rough edges. He's more sassy and dry and I like that he keeps those attributes even after he turns to the good side. He's exactly he kind of character I'd crush on if he were in a live action film.

Megara (Hercules)

Meg is not only one of my animated crushes but she's also one of my favourite Disney females. I liked that she was such a strong character but still had her vulnerability. I also liked that for once we had a 'bad girl' with an almost innocent male lead. She was feisty and cool but also damaged. And lets be honest, she was also super pretty. A shoo-in for this list.

Tulio (The Road To El Dorado)

I almost feel bad for not including both Tulio and Miguel but what can I say? I'm a sucker for tall, dark and handsome. I'm also more drawn to the more serious and broody type. If this was real life well, Miguel would be the one I'd be best friends with and Tulio would be the one I'd crush on. However, I've always sailed the Tulio and Miguel ship though and  as much as I like Tulio for myself, I like him all the more for Miguel. I don't want to be the Chel in the real life situation.

Shego (Kim Possible)

I always preferred Shego to Kim. I found Kim so bland. Shego was so much cooler and I mean, as a Goth teen I just found her whole look really appealing. I think I wanted to look like her as much as I crushed on her. Gosh, I'm such a cliché. I can't resist a bad girl/guy.

Your guess is as good as mine with this one. The only thing I can say is that he is voiced by the same person as Kovu, so perhaps that has something to do with it. For a long time I never really thought about the fact he's not human. I guess it's since he is a lot more anthropomorphic than the likes of Kovu and Diego. I know I'm not alone with this one, so perhaps someone else can help enlighten me on why I have these feels?

Yes, here I am with another bad boy turned good. I challenge anyone not to have a crush on Flynn. I mean look at his hair! I feel like characters these days have so much more personality and animation is so good that crushes happen more easily. I mean, look at those eyes? Male characters these days take themselves a lot less seriously. Which I totally dig. One thing I will say though is that I thought it was unfair how Flynn's hair ended up prettier than Rapunzel's. I would be well jealous if I was her.

So there you have it. My top ten animated baes as of the time of posting. Do you have an animated crush? Tell me yours in the comments below!

    1. Only his singing voice. B.D. Wong voiced him, I think. :)

  2. Li Shang is one of my favourite Disney heroes and I love the relationship he has with Mulan, so I can definitely see why he's feature for you! This was a sweet post, and it's reminded me I really need to watch The Lion King again too, one of my favourite Disney sequels! - Tasha

  3. Haha, totally with you on Flynn Rider - what a goofball!
I had a massive crush on Kim Possible too even though I was far too young to understand my sexuality properly.
